Tesla filed a Patent Registration for “Battery Swapping System And Techniques” just a few months ago, in May 2017.
The Patent filing describes a way to, you guessed it, exchange an EV’s battery for a new one. The patent is quite vague, and doesn’t get into any of the negatives that Musk has elucidated in the past.
The copyright and patent details a battery swapping system in which a Model S or Model X would be driven onto a ramp or lift before being raised to a predetermined height.
Technicians assigned to the station would then be able to assist with the machine’s operation and swap the battery for a fully charged one. From start to finish, the entire process would take about 15 minutes.
